Child Employment
What young people can work
Information provided by the Department of Education
As a department we recognise the value of children gaining experience by having part time
employment. Please see the breakdown below of the hours an employee of compulsory school age
(anyone who has finished year 11 and taken their GCSE’s) can work under Manx legislation.
They may work:
During the school term.
Up to 6 days of the week Monday to Thursday 2 hours after school and they must finish by 9pm
Friday 4 hours after school and they must finish by 9pm
Saturday 7 hours and they must finish by 10pm
Sunday 7 hours and they must finish by 10pm

During the school holidays.
Up to 6 days a week
Up to 7 hours a day
They must finish by 10pm

Rests and breaks.
After 2 hours continuous work an Employee of compulsory school age needs a break of 15
minutes
For a continuous period of work between 4 and 6 hours in any day (including any breaks
during this time of less than 30 minutes) the employee will need a break of 30 minutes
If they are working for a continuous period in a day (including any breaks during this time of
less than 1 hour) of more than 6 hours they will need a rest hour of an hour
There must be a two week period of the year when they are not at work or at school
If the young employee is 16 and under (still of compulsory school
age) they can work up to 28 hours a week
